Community Involvement

NAL values community participation and supports initiatives that make a lasting impact on the health and vibrancy of communities. Each year, NAL makes meaningful contributions to a number of organizations and communities.

Local Communities
NAL employs staff in communities throughout Alberta and Saskatchewan and supports numerous groups in these areas. The Trust supports youth hockey teams, 4-H clubs, hospitals, various sports clubs, family centres, schools, libraries and other local organizations.

United Way
NAL actively participates in United Way campaigns, and in 2007 received a second Award of Excellence for its Calgary campaign. We received our first Award of Excellence in 2004. The award recognizes outstanding organizations and their employees who have demonstrated a minimum three-year history of comprehensive employee campaigns exhibiting exceptional commitment and leadership. In 2007, 96 percent of our staff participated in our Calgary campaign. NAL equally matches employee donations. We raised a total of $164,418 for the United Way – 19 percent above target and a 25 percent increase over 2006 campaign.

Synergy Group
Working together towards common goals often achieves better results than working alone. A positive example of this principle is NAL's active participation in the Sundre Petroleum Operator's Group (SPOG). SPOG was created in 1992 as a tool to improve the relationship between the Sundre and area community and local oil and gas companies. Oil and gas companies and regulators alike recognize SPOG as a successful synergy group that resolves issues in a productive way. Members of the group include representatives from 30 oil and gas companies, 15 community groups in the Sundre/Caroline area and the Energy Resources Conservation Board. NAL donates both time and money to SPOG's Neighbour's Day; the organization's highlight event each year.

Energy in Action
NAL is also involved in the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers (CAPP) Energy in Action initiative. Energy in Action encourages children to become environmental stewards through classroom instruction and hands-on activities. NAL has partnered with local youth groups, schools and oil and gas companies to plant trees and beautify communities as part of this initiative. NAL staff is actively involved in the CAPP Board and CAPP committees.
