One of the first acquisitions made by the Trust was in the Lake Erie area of Ontario. NAL holds an average 20 percent working interest (managed) in a large, natural gas producing area under Lake Erie. Talisman Energy is the operator of the field with daily production of approximately 3.2 million cubic feet per day (MMcf/day) net to NAL.

Natural gas has been produced from underneath Lake Erie for over 100 years now. More than 2,000 wells have been drilled in the lake, 525 of which are still producing. They are drilled from a barge-mounted drilling rig anchored in water ranging from 20 to 50 metres in depth. The wells are 500 to 600 metres deep and require five to eight days to drill.

Lake Erie gas sells for a premium of 15 to 25 percent versus the average price of gas sales in Alberta because of its proximity to markets in southern Ontario.

2010 Plans
No wells are planned for drilling in 2010, as the focus will be on well recompletions and facility optimization.
